Attention usually concentrates on the human survivors, but the third Nagasaki series is about the trees that survived the bombing. They, too, are living witnesses. Charred by the heat-flash the rain eventually washed away their ashes, cleaned their stems and fed their roots. The scars rot away, but new bark envelops the old wounds and new foliage casts shadow to protect against the fierce Summer heat. The Japanese word for tree is Ki and its character shows roots forming the base of the tree and branches from which leafs can sprout. The same character is used for Thursday, moku-youbi. The trees therefore remind of the day their city was bombed, a Thursday. Charcoal black is used for the ink.
