AD STIJNMAN

NAGASAKI II

2004

The Roman numerals express the dualism of good in bad and bad in good. A woman and a man, both with severe skin burns, the burns made into decorations. The decorative pattern as used in women's kimono and the beauty of men's irezumi (Japanese art of tattoo). The tender, motherly curves of the young woman and the strength in the stature of the young man. No victims, no suffering, no heroes, just very human. The threat of only one plane hovering over the unprotected city. The uncontrolled devastation is represented by the manganese black in the ink, a toxic pigment. The dualism is expressed by printing every plate positive and negative.
