I AM NAGASAKI

2002

On that day the sun disappeared and the day turned into night. The earth with everything upon it was charred. The main theme of the first series is: "Watch out, never again". The mezzotints are on copper, the relief etchings on zinc. Copper stands for the sun, zinc for the moon. I prepared my ink mixing five different blacks: carbon black, bone black, Japanese charcoal, black iron oxide and Japanese stone black. They represent the five elements of Oriental philosophy: KA, SUI, MOKU, KIN, DO - fire, water, wood, metal, earth. It is day and night. It is life and destruction. At the end Mary looks down upon the city, her face scarred, but merciful.
